HISTORICAL NOTES:
Phoenicia became an early commercial empire due to skilled seamanship and ships built from the region's famed cedar trees. Their several city-states likewise founded colonies throughout the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The most influential was at ancient Carthage. Conclusive evidence supported ancient records that Phoenician ships sailed beyond Gibraltar and the coast of west Africa.

EFFECT OF SEA PEOPLES INVASION:
Circa 1200 BC the notorious Sea Peoples invasion undermined Egypt and destroyed the Hittite empire. Conversely, the various Phoenician city-states survived attack and later expanded both commercial influence and territory through colonial settlements. The city-states later fell to conquerors from Persia, Alexander, Ptolemy and Rome.
