EARLY ORIGINS:
Oral tradition claimed a race of giants (ancestors of the modern Kotoko) moved from eastern lands to the
area south of Lake Chad. Their
various clans shared a common culture, language, race and religion. They united for security and also
settled along the Chari River.
LATER CIVILIZATION:
The Sao were quite skilled in making artifacts from bronze, copper and iron. Numerous small city-states flourished until
"Yemenite" invaders eventually conquered the Sao and introduced
Islam to the region in the 14th century AD.
Expansion of the Bornu Empire quickened an
end to Sao culture, which ceased by the 16th century AD.
